Over three nights and four days, we were lucky to have a private guide who managed our transport, handled all logistics, and helped us avoid tourist traps. Having a private guide was invaluable—he not only organised our itinerary but also kept us away from overly persistent sellers, allowing us to relax and fully enjoy Egypt’s beauty and history. Interestingly, we hadn’t even realised that our booking included a private guide! I had thought I was paying for a luxury boat, but as it turned out, all the cruise boats have a fairly similar standard. The private guide, though, was a happy accident, and we couldn’t have been more grateful for his expertise.

Detailed Itinerary for Our Aswan to Luxor Nile Cruise

Day 1: Aswan – Embarkation and Sightseeing

Our trip began in Aswan, where our guide met us at the airport and took us straight to the Aswan High Dam. Built to control the Nile’s flooding and improve water storage, the dam was a fascinating start, giving us a real appreciation for the region’s history.

Next, we took a boat ride to Philae Temple, a stunning temple dedicated to the goddess Isis. Set on Agilkia Island, the temple was moved to its current location to save it from rising waters after the dam was built. Philae Temple’s beautiful design and picturesque surroundings made it one of the highlights of our tour.

We also visited the Granite Quarries and the Unfinished Obelisk, where ancient Egyptians carved massive stones for their monuments. Seeing how these structures were created thousands of years ago was mind-blowing!

After our tours, we returned to the cruise boat for lunch and a relaxing evening in Aswan, enjoying dinner and our first night on board.

Day 2: Kom Ombo and Edfu Temples

Waking up on the Nile was magical, and after a hearty breakfast, we set off for the next two incredible sites:

  • Kom Ombo Temple: This unusual double temple is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile god, and Haeroris, the falcon-headed god. Its intricate carvings and ancient inscriptions were mesmerising.
  • Edfu Temple: Known as one of Egypt’s best-preserved temples, Edfu is dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. The towering columns and elaborate designs of this temple left us in awe.

After lunch, we continued sailing toward Luxor, passing through the Esna Lock, which turned into one of our most memorable experiences on the river. While we waited our turn to pass through, local vendors paddled up beside our boat, tossing up items to sell—tablecloths, scarves, and souvenirs. It was a bustling scene with vendors calling out prices and assurances about the quality. Bargaining from the boat’s edge was such a fun experience! I ended up buying a beautifully patterned tablecloth, which I’ll treasure as a memento of the trip.

Day 3: Luxor West Bank – Valley of the Kings and More

On the third day, we arrived in Luxor and headed to the West Bank to explore Egypt’s most iconic sites:

  • Valley of the Kings: Our private guide took us to this famous burial ground of ancient pharaohs like Tutankhamun. Each tomb was a masterpiece, with intricate paintings narrating the pharaohs’ journey to the afterlife.
  • Temple of Queen Hatshepsut: Built by Egypt’s only female pharaoh, this unique temple blends seamlessly into the cliffs of El Deir El Bahari. It’s a marvel of ancient architecture.
  • Colossi of Memnon: These two colossal statues once guarded a temple and still stand as impressive markers of Egypt’s history.

After a packed day, we returned to the cruise for lunch and a relaxing night. Luxor was a smaller city than I’d imagined, which made it feel very welcoming. Our guide even introduced us to his favourite local spots for lunch, and we enjoyed a quiet night on the boat.

Day 4: Luxor East Bank – Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride and Temple Tours

We started our final day with an incredible hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings. Rising before dawn, we crossed the Nile to the launch site, where dozens of balloons were ready for take-off. As we rose, we could see local farms and backyards, giving us a unique view of everyday life in Luxor. Floating above the Valley of the Kings at sunrise was truly surreal, with the golden light casting a warm glow over the temples and cliffs below. This was one of the most breathtaking experiences of our trip.

After our balloon ride, we returned to the boat for breakfast and set out for our final two stops:

  • Karnak Temple: This sprawling complex, with its massive Hypostyle Hall, was the perfect end to our temple visits. The towering columns and intricate hieroglyphs were astounding.

If you’re planning a trip to Cappadocia, these seven essential tips from my recent visit will help you make the most out of your time in this enchanting region.

1. Easy Airport Transfers Despite the Distance

After a long flight, the last thing you want is a complicated commute. Cappadocia’s main airports, Kayseri Erkilet and Nevşehir Kapadokya, are both about an hour away from the main towns of Göreme and Ürgüp. We flew into Kayseri Erkilet via Turkish Airways as the times and flight prices suited us. But don’t worry—transport from the airport is straightforward and reliable. Airport shuttles and taxis are readily available, and many hotels offer pick-up services. 

We caught a taxi, and they did not hike the prices. The driver was very trustworthy and friendly. He stopped in at his friend’s travel shop for us to book a tour, which was handy. It was a family-run business, and their cute little girl entertained us. We arranged for the same driver to take us back to the airport.

2. Choose Your Cave Hotel Wisely

Staying in a cave hotel is one of Cappadocia’s most memorable experiences. But here’s a tip that will make a difference: choose a hotel on one of the hillsides for incredible panoramic views of the valleys and hot-air balloons. Properties such as Sultan Cave Suites provide a vantage point over the entire region. Remember that a hilltop location can mean a steep walk back to your hotel after exploring the town. Be prepared for some exercise or check if your hotel offers transportation from the town centre! We stayed at a lovely cave hotel, but it was down on the flat. It meant an easy walk to town, but we had to walk up the hill to enjoy the hot air balloons. Our hotel had heated flooring as we were there in winter, and it was a lovely place to stay. 

3. Catch the Best Views of the Hot-Air Balloons

One of the highlights of Cappadocia is watching the sky fill with vibrant hot-air balloons at sunrise. While several spots offer great views, the terrace at Sultan Cave Suites is known to provide one of the best views. Arrive early to secure your spot as this area can get crowded with other eager travelers. If you’re not staying at a hotel with a dedicated view, many cafes and restaurants provide excellent viewpoints for a small fee.

4. Explore the Landscapes on a Quad Bike

Cappadocia offers many ways to explore its surreal landscapes, including organised bike and horseback tours. But if you prefer flexibility, renting a quad bike in Göreme town allows you to explore the valleys and rock formations at your own pace. Riding through the rugged terrain, you’ll be able to create your own adventure, stopping wherever you want for photos or to soak in the views. Just ensure you understand the basic routes to avoid straying too far off the beaten path! We had a ball hooning around the hills and exploring on our own.

With its rich history, vibrant markets, and fusion of European and Asian influences, Istanbul has quickly become my favourite city in the world. One of the highlights of my time in Istanbul was a six-hour food tour that took us from the historic Old City, through bustling markets, and across the Bosphorus to the Asian side of Istanbul. Here’s a taste of my unforgettable culinary adventure in Istanbul, one that any food lover or traveller should experience. Six hours sounds like a marathon, but it really wasn’t; I was sad when the delightful tour ended. 

Starting the Day: Traditional Turkish Breakfast

Where to Begin: Turkish breakfasts are renowned for their variety and freshness, and what better place to start than in the heart of Istanbul’s markets? Our tour guide introduced us to local vendors along the market, where we handpicked ingredients for an authentic Turkish breakfast experience.

What’s on the Table: Turkish breakfasts are a feast of flavours. Think fluffy simit bread (a sesame-coated bagel), fresh cheeses, olives, meats, honey over clotted cream, eggs, and spreads like hazelnut spread, which they call their version of Nutella and tangy tahini. With the warm embrace of Turkish tea, it was the perfect start to our day.

Strolling Through Istanbul’s Markets

Next, we ventured into Istanbul’s markets, where every stall is filled with aromatic spices, colourful produce, and curious street foods. From the Spice Bazaar to smaller street stalls, Istanbul’s markets are a sensory delight, offering an authentic glimpse into local life.

Market Finds: You’ll find everything from fragrant sumac and za’atar spices to Turkish delight and dried fruits in these markets. We sampled a few Turkish sweets along the way – each piece of baklava is more addictive than the last! The way that the Turkish sweets are displayed is gorgeous. The energy and variety here are a must-experience for anyone visiting Istanbul.

Crossing the Bosphorus: Ferry Ride to the Asian Side of Istanbul

A unique feature of Istanbul is its split across two continents – Europe and Asia. Our journey continued with a ferry ride across the Bosphorus to the Asian side of Istanbul, which has a charm all its own.

Feeding the Seagulls: One of my favourite memories was locals showing us that it is a tradition in Istanbul to toss pieces of simit to seagulls trailing the ferry. It was so much fun being a local for a moment and watching the birds swoop in mid-air to catch the morsels of bread.

A Taste of Tradition: The Best Kebab in Istanbul

Finding the Perfect Kebab Spot: Istanbul’s kebabs are famous, and our guide took us to a spot locals love and a shop that is generations old. We were treated to a perfectly spiced, tender kebab that truly raised the bar. Made fresh and packed with smoky flavour, the kebab was served with lavash bread, grilled tomatoes, and green peppers – a meal worth travelling across continents for.

Why Istanbul Kebabs Are Special: Istanbul’s kebabs are distinct from those in other parts of Turkey due to their ingredients and cooking methods. The flavours are richer, and the quality of meat and spices is unforgettable.

On the Asian side of Istanbul, we indulged in a portion of popular Turkish street food – midye dolma or stuffed mussels. This dish features mussels filled with spiced rice, lemon, and herbs, served right from a street vendor. Eating mussels from a local stall is an authentic Istanbul experience, and the savoury flavour was incredible. The fun thing is that you eat the morsel straight out of the shell. 

Why It’s Unique: Midye dolma is best enjoyed fresh, and it’s a popular snack for locals and travellers alike. The sight of mussel vendors setting up along the streets as evening approaches is a quintessential Istanbul scene.

Pickle Juice: An Acquired Taste

One of the more unusual stops on our tour was sampling pickle juice or turşu suyu. Istanbulites swear by this tangy drink, and it’s particularly popular among market-goers. While it’s an acquired taste, I couldn’t leave without giving it a try. The drink is briny and sour, and though it might not be for everyone, it’s certainly one of those “only in Istanbul” experiences!

Fun Fact: Pickle juice is often consumed as a palate cleanser after greasy foods. It’s also believed to be a remedy for hangovers – a useful tip for those enjoying Istanbul’s nightlife!

Exploring the Asian Side of Istanbul

The Asian side of Istanbul, particularly neighbourhoods like Kadıköy, is often overlooked by first-time visitors, but it has a vibrant, local energy that’s distinctly different from the European side. Kadıköy’s streets are filled with cafes, bars, and shops offering everything from fresh produce to vintage treasures.

What to Do in Kadıköy: We wandered through bustling markets and cozy cafes, sampling traditional menemen (a savoury tomato and egg dish) and börek (layered pastry). The vibe here is more laid-back, and it’s the perfect place to unwind and get a sense of local life away from the tourist hubs.

Celebrating Istanbul’s Food Scene

Istanbul’s food scene is a mix of traditional and modern flavours, combining influences from Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Whether you’re exploring local markets, savouring street food, or enjoying a multi-course meal at a restaurant, Istanbul offers a culinary experience unlike any other.

Why a Food Tour is a Must: With so many dishes, flavours, and experiences packed into one city, a guided food tour is the best way to navigate it all. Not only did we taste the city’s best foods, but we also learned about Istanbul’s culture, history, and traditions.

Flying Into Kayseri: Your Gateway to Cappadocia

Getting There: Most visitors fly into Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR), which connects to major cities like Istanbul, this is where we flew into. From Kayseri, you can easily jump in a taxi to Göreme, Cappadocia’s central town and the heart of many activities. On the way into town, our taxi driver stopped at local tourist operators, where we were able to book some activities during out stay. 

Arrival in Göreme

Upon arrival in Göreme, you’ll feel transported back in time. Known for its iconic fairy chimneys and rock formations, Göreme is a small town with endless charm. Check into a cave hotel to experience an authentic stay; many hotels here were carved directly into the rock centuries ago. Some popular options include Sultan Cave Suites, Kelebek Cave Hotel, and Mithra Cave Hotel. Our hotel stayed inside a cave that had heated flooring and was very cozy, with only a short stroll into town. 

Day 2: Hot Air Ballooning and Open-Air Museum

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Cappadocia’s hot air balloon rides are magical year-round, but there’s something particularly stunning about seeing the frost-dusted valleys from above. Balloon rides usually begin around sunrise and offer panoramic views over the stunning landscape. Book your ride in advance, as they can be in high demand over New Year’s.

Tip: Be prepared for chilly weather; dress warmly and bring gloves to enjoy the journey comfortably.

Exploring Göreme Open-Air Museum

After your balloon ride, warm up with a traditional Turkish breakfast before heading to the Göreme Open-Air Museum. This UNESCO World Heritage site features ancient monasteries and frescoes dating back to the 10th century. The museum provides insight into Cappadocia’s rich history, and the snow adds a serene atmosphere to your visit.

Day 3: Hiking in the Valleys and Indulging in Cappadocian Cuisine

Winter Quad Biking in Cappadocia

One of the highlights of Cappadocia is its beautiful valleys, each offering unique rock formations and landscapes. In winter, trails like Red Valley and Rose Valley provide a peaceful hiking experience, often undisturbed by crowds. But you can also hire quad bikes from town and explore the valleys by quad bike. We had a ball zooming around the fairy chimneys, going up to the high points so that we had beautiful views of the valleys around the Cappadocia region.

You’ll find vibrant celebrations in Göreme and Ürgüp, where locals and visitors gather to ring in the new year together. The town of Göreme is lined with open fires along the street with may of the restaurants offering mulled wine on the street. Many cave hotels also host intimate gatherings for guests, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere for the New Year’s festivities.
